Student
politics: Empowerment or destruction?,
by Sirjana Khanal (ae 08/05/2026)
Student
unions abolished as per RSP election
manifesto: Minister Pokharel (nn) [What on earth is that
for a ridiculous statement? Under
Article 17 of the Constitution, the
right to form student organisations and
trade unions is one of the fundamental
rights of the people of Nepal. This
fundamental right cannot simply be taken
away from people in an authoritarian
manner. The article also mentions the
right to form political parties. So why
not just abolish those as well? What
sort of rule of law is this? As the RSP
in 2022 was opposed to the provinces and
did not participate in the elections
there at all, it cannot today, despite
its large majority in the House of
Representatives, push through any
legislative changes, let alone
constitutional amendments. If the party
and its government continue as they have
done so far, a major disillusionment
will set in by next year’s provincial
elections at the latest. Nepal needs
significant changes in many areas, but
they must be planned with foresight –
not anti-democratic, unlawful, inhumane
and authoritarian measures!]
